How to Wheelie, by Christian Pfeiffer and motorradmagazin

Christian Pfeiffer and motorradmagazin use English subtitles in this video to explain how to ride a wheelie, with a questions and answers section.

Christian: I do shows since 1996, first with the trial and 3 years with the big bike.

[World Champion 2003]

Some talent is necessary, but wheelies are not so difficult.  Everyone is afraid of falling back. The most important thing is to use the rear brake from the beginning.

The major thing is to correct with the rear brake and not with the gas.

I’m always on the brake and in front of falling.  I use it strongly to correct the angle.  That’s the A and the O.

There are two possibilities to launch a wheelie – using the throttle on strong big bikes or using the clutch.  In the first gear, you snap the clutch at approximately one-third gas.

The art of wheeling is to reach the balance point and riding without acceleration.  Most beginners are wheeling with acceleration.  The front rear is very low.  The real wheelie is to ride with balance.

Interviewer: What is your opinion about doing stunts on the public road?

Christian: Nothing.  The US guys think it’s cool but I don’t.  I suggest practicing in closed areas.

Interviewer: When somebody asks you how to begin – with a big bike or a 50 ccm?  What is your answer?

Christian: I think the easiest way is start with an Enduro or with a Supermoto.  It is easier than using a trial.  A trial is very slow.  You can fall sideways.  Some speed is good for stabilizing the bike.  Supermoto or Enduro seems to be easier than a big bike.  But at the end, you can learn it on every bike you want.

Interviewer: It’s a question of money [Laughter].

Christian: Experience is more important than being “hot” in the younger years.  I think you can do stunt riding for a long time.  A lot of young people are starting now all over the world – in the US, in Germany, etc.  Actually, they go the right way using cheap accident bikes, etc.

The more you sleep, the more you are tired.  Be ready to rumble and always use the brakes.
