How to Wheelie a ‘fiddy’ (50cc) by DS, posted on youtube by cfierro2003. Emphasis is on using the brake and first gear wheelies, and trying not to hurt yourself or the bike (which is why they are practicing on these little bikes in the first place.)

DS: That is the transmission.  All the way down is neutral.  One is up first, obviously.  Next is second.  What’s really important is when you’re in first, if you’re on the gas really hard and you shift into second, it’s probably going to flip on you which is why when guys are riding in and they go [revving sound] first gear and I know they’re going to shift, I’m like, “Ooh,” because I’m expecting it to happen.

So when you shift in the second, what you want to do is get off the gas, let the RPMs lower themselves and then shift into second.  You’ll be fine from there.

First-gear wheelies – you know what first?  This is how far back the bike will go before you flip.  So when you’re performing a wheelie, you’re going to have the tendency once the bike gets really high up to take your feet off the pegs and try and run with the bike.  If you’re going slow, then that’s fine.  But the key to performing wheelies is the back brake.

If the bike comes up too fast for you, step on the back brake.  It will bring it back down.  Even if you’re on the gas, you jam on that back break it’s going to come down.

Male 1: Running will scrape your leg through against that 12-bar

DS: Yes, this 12-bar.  Whoever is going to ride this bike, this bike will probably let the ones that had no idea how to wheelie ride because it has a big [board kid] [ph 00:01:23] on it.  It’s got a [inaudible 00:01:25] clutch and it’s easy to wheelie.  So those that don’t know how to wheelie which I think is everyone, right?

If you try to run with the bike, bring in your legs off.  This 12 bar is going to cut you.  Unless you have jeans on, it will probably scrape you up real badly.  So really honestly guys trust the back brake.    If it comes up too far, jam on the back brake.  Right here is a hand brake for the rear.   If you feel more comfortable, you can grab that.  But you’re not going to get the leverage you’re going to get from when you step on it.  So this will help.  You can use both if you want.

There are two methods into bringing front wheel up.  One is clutching it.  You guys aren’t going to learn that today.  But the second is first gear wheelies.  When you do it in first gear, it’s easier to control going backwards and forward.  But being that you’re going so slow, the bike is going to want to sway from left to right.  So what we’re going to do first is just focus on getting the front wheel up in first gear.  Then later on, maybe we’ll move into second gear.  You guys can then actually practice going side to side.

Okay, who’s going to be my first volunteer?
